There is a growing awareness about the importance of taking a step back from our digital lives and reconnecting with nature. As people are becoming more interested in nature conservation and its impact on mental health.
In November 2022 I started volunteering at 100Acer after a chance meeting with one of its trustees and on my first day I happened to be taught how to make hazel hurdles - a skill I have been developing since. Now, an interesting project has taken shape in the form of a bird hide.
The Hazel Bird Hide is a labor of love, designed and built by a team of dedicated volunteers at 100Acer. Set amidst a lush Cotswolds landscape, it provides an idyllic spot for observing and appreciating the beauty of local bird species and other native creatures.
The hide is a perfect spot for birdwatchers, nature photographers, and anyone who wants to experience the tranquillity and rejuvenation that nature can offer. With the NatureWatch group visiting 100Acer on the 26th of March, the team is working diligently to ensure that the hide is ready for this exciting event.
The Hazel Bird Hide project is more than just a bird-watching spot; it is a testament to the importance of nature conservation. By providing a dedicated space for observing and learning about the local bird species, it raises awareness about the need to protect and preserve their habitats.
The hide has been made entirely from materials harvested sustainably from the many stands of Hazel in the hedgerows on and around 100Acer's land. However, you may spot some bamboo in places - this was obtained from a local resident who was cutting back his large bambo stand. We tried to use a bit of bamboo in the hide but with it not being native (and making the hide look like a tiki bar) we have decided to keep the bamboo for making canes to sell & raise money for the project.
Additionally, the 100Acer team will be building a 'roundhouse' elsewhere on the site. This will be used as a hub for various educational activities and workshops that promote conservation efforts in the area.
In today's fast-paced world, digital distractions are increasingly taking a toll on our mental health. The Hazel Bird Hide offers a wonderful opportunity to escape the virtual world and immerse oneself in the beauty of nature.
Stepping away from screens and engaging in physical activities in a natural environment has numerous benefits for mental well-being, such as:
The Hazel Bird Hide at 100Acer represents the perfect blend of nature conservation, mental health benefits, and community engagement. By providing a space for people to connect with nature, it encourages mindfulness, relaxation, and an appreciation for the natural world.
As the Nature Watch group gears up for their visit, the 100Acer team is excited to share this unique experience with them and inspire others to embrace the healing power of nature.
